Black Oil Sunflower: Any of several plants of the genus Helianthus, especially H. annuus, having tall coarse stems and large, yellow-rayed flower heads that produce edible seeds rich in oil. -the most preferred seed of many small feeder birds. Black Oil Sunflower has a higher percentage of meat and is very nutritious. It also has a high percentage of oil which is excellent for winter birds. ATTRACTS: jays, red bellied woodpeckers, finches, goldfinches, northern cardinals, evening grosbeaks, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and grackles.
Nyger Seed (Thistle): a preferred food of American goldfinches. ATTRACTS: goldfinches, house finches, redpolls.
Flax: Usually ignored by other species other then the finches and mourning doves. ATTRACTS: mourning doves, western house finches.
Safflower: Looks like a white sunflower seed. Safflower is grown for its oil and for bird seed. Birds that are attracted to safflower are cardinals and other big-billed birds. Although. Most birds prefer black oil sunflower over safflower. ATTRACTS: cardinals, mourning doves, white throated sparrows.
Corn: Cracked corn attracts doves, sparrows and quail. Whole corn is a favorite of Wild Turkeys and ducks. ATTRACTS: white throated sparrow, grackles, mourning doves, and blue jays.
Millet: A small, round grain found in seed mixes. Millet is a favored food of many smaller, ground foraging birds ATTRACTS: sparrow-like birds, mourning doves, doves.
Milo: Western birds tend to consume milo more than eastern birds. ATTRACTS: mourning doves, pheasants, quail, and doves.
Canaryseed: a major component of feed mixtures for caged and wild birds. It is native to southern Europe and the Middle East. ATTRACTS: canaries, finches, siskens, juncos, buntings and many other small species love this seed.
Wheat: Wheat is one of the most common grains grown throughout the world. It is also one of the oldest known crops. Annual or biennial grass having erect flower spikes and light brown grains. ATTRACTS: pheasants, quail, and doves.
Oats: a species of cereal grain, and the seeds of this plant. They are used for food for people, and also as fodder for animals, especially poultry and horses. Oat straw is used as animal bedding and also sometimes used as animal feeds. ATTRACTS: pheasants, quail, and doves.
Canola: Any of several cultivars of oilseed rape (more fully: canola oil); the vegetable oil high in mono-unsaturated fatty acid obtained from these cultivars. ATTRACTS: canaries, mourning doves, house finches.
